Just Three Years

“In three years’ time I shall be dead. I must therefore get this and that in shape and finished, or it will be too late.”

“Rovering to Success (Illustrated): A book of life-sport for young men” by Robert Baden-Powell

Walk it off!

Wise words from a new grandpa.

Walk it off! ~ One of my favorite dual meaning sayings.  Many people know the words from a scrape or a fall when their father checks the damage and then utters those famous words, “Walk it off!”.  The same phrase may be used in the case of an emotional scrape or fall.  Check for damage, then move on.

At present, I carry these words with me on my left wrist every day.

Move Forward ~ My personal mantra after 2002 gaining more meaning and empowerment after 2005.  When bad things happen you can’t look back.  You must look to the future and focus your energies in that direction.

I don’t take photograph’s, they are a gift! ~ My photography is something that I do because it gives me a great pleasure. I never crop, edit or enhance my photos afterwards.  I always try to get the shot right the first time.  When everything that goes into a shot works, it’s like a gift to me.

Likewise I like to share my work.  That is my gift to my family and friends.

Irma

Things that Irma taught me . . .

  • I can live without cable TV
  • I have kind-hearted neighbors
  • Living less than five (5) miles from the power plant makes no difference
  • People do not understand basic traffic laws and traffic courtesy
  • My refrigerator requires annual purge and cleaning
  • I was infinitely more prepared than most people
  • I was not as prepared as I could have been
  • My Sterno stove works but requires one tin per meal
  • Alcohol rejuvenates a used Sterno tin
  • Saving old Ice Packs and keeping them frozen was a good idea
  • Battery backups are a good idea.
  • It is smart to consolidate battery backups and use up only one at a time
  • I like moon-rise almost as much as sunrise
  • Verizon Rocks!!!
  • Move ice into coolers as soon as the power fails.  Keeps from having a melting ice mess in the freezer
  • A generator is wise to keep a small refrigerator cold.

Preparedness Planning ~ Water

People panic prior to the arrival of a hurricane and rush off to the market for bottled water.  The key that I think people miss is that anything can happen to your water supply at any time, not just during a severe weather event.

In that light, I do the following to ensure myself an adequate supply of drinking water during short duration emergencies.  The generally accepted rule of thumb is one (1) gallon of water per person, per day.

I maintain an inventory of eight (8) gallon jugs of spring water all year long.  Each month I buy one (1) gallon of spring water at the supermarket.  This gallon replaces the oldest jug in my backup water supply which I promptly use for drinking water.  In this way, no one jug is more than 8 months old.

When I do have an opportunity to ‘stock up’ on water as we have an opportunity during the early stages of tropical weather preparedness, I have two (2) 5-gallon Coleman water jugs that are kept in readiness.  Simply filling each of these with tap water provides me with 10 days of drinking water as well.

AND no standing in line at the supermarket!
